DOC to RTF Converter FAQs

The main benefit of converting to RTF (Rich Text Format) is universal compatibility. RTF was specifically designed to be opened by nearly any word processing program on any operating system, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's the safest format to use when you're not sure what software the person receiving the file has.

Your basic text formatting, such as bold, italics, font sizes, and colors, will be preserved very well. However, advanced features that are highly specific to Microsoft Word, such as SmartArt graphics or complex table properties, may be simplified or lost because they don't have a direct equivalent in the universal RTF standard.

Your RTF file is often larger because of how it stores data. It saves all of its formatting information as readable text commands mixed in with your content. While this makes it easy for many different programs to understand, it's a much less efficient way to store data compared to the compact, binary structure of the older DOC format.

The key difference is that RTF saves your formatting, while a TXT file strips it all away. Converting your DOC to RTF will keep your bolded text, different fonts, and paragraph layouts. Converting to a TXT file, on the other hand, would remove all of that, leaving you with only the raw, unformatted text content.

You should expect to lose features that are not part of the basic document standard. This typically includes interactive or proprietary elements like VBA macros, comments, tracked changes, and embedded objects such as Excel spreadsheets. The converter focuses on preserving the visual text and layout, not these advanced functionalities.
