PNG to WEBP Converter FAQs

You should convert your PNGs to WEBP to significantly improve your website's loading speed. The WEBP format, developed by Google, uses more advanced compression to create files that are typically much smaller than PNGs while maintaining a similar high level of visual quality.

You have the choice to not lose any quality. The WEBP format is flexible and can operate in a lossless mode, just like PNG, which creates a perfect pixel-for-pixel copy of your image. Alternatively, you can select WEBP's lossy mode in the settings to get an even smaller file by sacrificing a tiny, often imperceptible, amount of image detail.

WEBP's transparency is just as good as PNG's. Both formats support a full 8-bit alpha channel, which allows for 256 levels of opacity. This means your new WEBP file will retain the exact same smooth, anti-aliased edges and semi-transparent effects as your original PNG.

You should use lossless WEBP when converting graphics where perfect sharpness is essential, such as for logos, icons, and images containing text. You should use lossy WEBP for photographic images, where you can achieve the largest file size reduction with very little noticeable difference to the human eye.

The only potential downside relates to compatibility with very old software. While WEBP is now supported by all modern web browsers, if your users need to save images to use in much older desktop applications, those programs may not recognize the .webp format. For web display, however, it's almost always the superior choice.
