MOV to MKV Converter FAQs

You would convert a MOV to an MKV for greater flexibility and for use in media centers. While MOV is an Apple standard, MKV is a universal, open-source container that is a favorite for media libraries like Plex because of its superior ability to handle multiple audio and subtitle tracks in a single file.

In most cases, there is absolutely no loss of quality. Because both MOV and MKV containers can hold the same modern video and audio streams (like H.264 and AAC), our converter can often just copy the data from one container to the other. This "remuxing" process is perfectly lossless and very fast.

The biggest advantage of MKV is its unmatched support for multiple tracks. An MKV file can easily store numerous audio tracks for different languages and a wide variety of subtitle formats, all perfectly synced in one convenient file. This makes it the ideal format for creating a complete digital copy of a movie or TV episode.

If the video and audio tracks are simply copied (remuxed) without being re-encoded, the final MKV file will be almost exactly the same size as the original MOV. If a specific track inside the MOV is in a rare format that needs to be re-encoded, the size might change slightly, but it typically remains very close.

It is not recommended for that purpose. Apple's professional editing software like Final Cut Pro and iMovie is highly optimized to work with the native MOV format. While you might be able to import an MKV with extra software, you would lose the smooth, stable editing experience. This conversion is best for playback and storage, not for further editing on a Mac.
