JPG to ICO FAQs
Usually, it will not. A detailed photograph contains many colors and fine points that become blurry and unrecognizable when shrunk down to a tiny icon size. This converter works best when used with simple, high-contrast graphics, such as a logo that happens to be saved as a JPG file.
The converter treats your uploaded JPG image as a master copy. It then automatically resizes this source image to generate several standard icon dimensions, such as 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48 pixels. All of these different-sized images are then bundled together into the single .ico file that you download.
No, you cannot. To create an icon with a transparent background, your source image must also have transparency. The JPG format does not support transparency, so the resulting ICO file will always have a solid, opaque background based on your original image.
Because icon files must be square, our tool automatically adjusts your rectangular JPG. It will typically add solid colored bars, usually white or black, to the shorter sides of your image. This process centers your graphic on a new, perfectly square canvas without distorting the original image.
It is always much better to start with a PNG file. A PNG can be saved with lossless quality and, most importantly, it supports full transparency. An icon created from a PNG source can have a clear background that blends into any website, while an icon made from a JPG will always have a solid background.
